Newton, author of two other books on the FBI, asserts that "nearly everything you know about the FBI is wrong" and the organization is "deliberately shrouded in mystery." Newton's purpose is to eliminate some of the secrecy that surrounds the FBI while acknowledging that it is impossible to disclose a complete picture of an organization whose records are in large part unavailable to the public.

Coverage begins in 1908, the year of the bureau's creation, and ends in early 2003. Entries are arranged alphabetically and range from a single paragraph to several pages. Access to articles is aided by cross-references directly in the text and a detailed index. Entries fall under broad categories: biographical sketches (Hoover, John Edgar); organizational practices (Wiretapping); programs ("COINTELPRO"); notable cases (Watergate scandal); federal legislation authorizing investigations (Mann Act); histories of other relevant organizations (KGB); and miscellaneous entries (Prohibition). The text is supplemented by appendixes, including a chronology that is current as of November 2002 but omits some significant events, such as the Oklahoma City bombing. Finally, the book contains an extensive bibliography of both scholarly and popular sources.

The work successfully reveals the sinister side of the FBI, such as its surveillance of individuals and groups, questionable information-gathering practices, and J. Edgar Hoover's inaction with respect to civil rights investigations. Articles are generally well written in a journalistic style; however, information is not always presented in a neutral tone. Furthermore, the text contains typographical errors, which detracts from the quality of the writing.

The FBI Encyclopedia covers material similar to The FBI: A Comprehensive Reference Guide (Oryx, 1999), though Newton's offering is neither as scholarly nor as objective. It is useful as an overview that is accessible to a general audience. A bumbling group of British mountaineers mounts an assault on Rum Doodle, a slightly higher neighbor of Everest, in Bowman's parody novel, which was published in 1956 and became a classic within the climbing community. Bowman cobbles together a wide-ranging crew of lovably clueless climbers, including the puffed-up narrator, Binder, and a misguided guide named Humphrey Jungle, who constantly gets lost and turns up in unlikely places. Other prominent members include measurement-obsessed scientist Christopher Wish as well as linguistic expert Lancelot Constant, whose chief talent seems to be ticking off the porters from the indigenous tribe called the Yogistani, who speak through their stomachs via a series of indecipherable grunts. Early on, a memorable mishap occurs, in which Jungle ends up falling into a crevasse and the rescue effort consists of the rest of the crew joining him while they get soused on "medicinal" champagne. Bowman also offers a couple of predictable chapters as the group goes in circles and then proceeds to climb the wrong mountain, and he spends an inordinate amount of prose on their suffering at the hands of the sadistic cook, a Yogistani named Pong. Bowman manages to sustain a very thin conceit for a large number of chapters, although the silliness can at times be sophomoric. He redeems himself somewhat with an amusing "surprise" ending that features the 3,000 Yogistani porters involved in the expedition, and overall he proves himself to be an entertaining humorist who has much to offer for readers who like their outdoor humor dripping with understated British irony. Most of the book is devoted to thermodynamics and it doesn't introduce statistical mechanics until the final chapters. As an undergraduate text it provides all you'll need for a solid foundation in thermal physics and it's a bit more rigorous than Schroeder. The problems at the end of the chapters are not as good as the ones you'll find in Schroder or other standard texts, and are often ambiguously worded. Answers to problems are in the back of the book which lets you check your work (there isn't a solutions manual). It's a book that will get you by the thermal physics portion of the GRE, but I find my knowledge in statistical mechanics to be lacking after a semester with this book. Overall, I think this textbook is better for classical thermodynamics and the Schroeder book is better for statistical mechanics.

This book is ancient. It was my required textbook for Thermal Physics. It can be somewhat hard to read, almost rambley at times, but once you get the hang of it it’s fine. It’s very wordy. The price is nice though.

Book cover was separated from the pages, aside from this, pages are almost like new! Great book!

Good summary of thermodynamics.

Overcomplicated. The entire book. I'm not just talking rigorous... A good example is the two page proof that the number of microstates in n particles, if each can range from 0 to q, whereas the sum of all must add up to q, is n + q - 1 CHOOSE q. This can be proved (just as formally) in about 3 lines, while being much more intuitive!

"Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory, and Statistical Thermodynamics (3rd Edition)" is an excellent text to learn the fundamentals. This text should be the text any Physics Professor uses. Do not be fooled by other texts. This one is the best. My professor now is trying to create his own text for Thermo, and it is horrible. Publishers need to be more honest to their clients!

Not very useful.That was my first impression of this book. Suppose I had left my review to the three words above. You would have been left with an empty feeling with expectations unfulfilled, wondering if there was more to it than just those words. You'd probably say my review wasn't very helpful.Well, that about sums up my feelings for this text. Every time I open it for reference, I read a few pages, looking for something that just doesn't seem to be there. I am left with expectations unfulfilled, wondering if I was missing something. I usually put it back on the shelf and move to the next book, thinking "Hmm. That wasn't very helpful."This book sits in my library next to the Callen text on thermo and stat mech. I also have a copy of Reichl's stat mech text. Between Salinger, Callen, and Reichl, one might begin to get a handle on the subject, but not one of these books is the *definitive* text on the subject. I haven't found that one yet. I would suggest that if one is looking for yet another reference text, put this one in the number 2 or number 3 slot on your list.
