This book will seriously change your sex life. My boyfriend and I decided to get into something exciting and "out there" after Nicole Daedone's revolutionary "slow sex" technique left our sexual experience rather unfulfilled. "The Heart of Tantric Sex" was a recommendation of my meditation teacher and was exactly what we were looking for! My boyfriend and I have both come to agree that our sexual experience before this book was not sex but mere mechanical attempts at the idea lol. Of course, I think without meditation practice in tandem the book would not be sinking in as smoothly, especially in the practice of being "spiritually and physically in the moment" during foreplay and beyond. An iPhone app like Simple Habit or Gaiam's Meditation could be a great asset to get together with this book to get the full spectrum of colors out of it.

I have another book called Teach Yourself Tantric Sex that is good and deals some of the core of the topic but then goes into technique, kind of like a manual. This book backs it up and expands on the foundations of the topic and how the physical, emotional, and subconscious interacts play into sex. Im currently rereading the the highlight sections and it gives me a new perspect of what real love making is compared to what we have been told in western culture. A great start to the journey....

Don't let the possibly "new age"ish vibe of what you think you know about Tantra turn you away! The way she explains it is so relatable and makes more and more sense the more I read. Like...it's already making such a huge (and welcomed) difference in the way I approach sex itself in general. Even though I'm only 40ish pages in right now, I wanted to come here and recommend this book to anyone struggling with the same or similar frustrating issues that I've had for years in the bedroom. I cannot say for sure yet whether this book would be particularly helpful to same-sex partners. While she does not at all appear averse to it, there is a lot of talk about the opposite polarity and balance between "male and female". I'll know more once I'm done! This is the third time I've bought and read this book, and it just keeps getting better. I'm not entirely sure I buy into the archetypes 100% (I attended a seminar when the first edition came out and thought Vogler had to struggle making the movie fit the paradigm), but it provokes thought, adds insight and depth to the reading experience, and is a classic in helping writers along a journey none of us really understands. Vogler puts complex through and the structure of mythology in prose that's easy to understand a motivating, at least until we splat against a wall and go looking for more answers to yet more questions about writing.

This book, along with James N. Frey's The Key: How to Write Damn Good Fiction Using the Power of Myth, helped me get out of the doldrums as I contemplated draft 4 of my first novel. Although I had pretty much worked out the plot bugs by the end of draft 3, the manuscript still seemed limp and the characterization uneven. I knew I needed a fresh take on my characters and their basic predicament -- The Writer's Journey helped me see that I already had all the elements of a great tale, but just needed to use them to better advantage.I re-mapped the entire story using ideas from this book and could feel the characters and plot taking on new life as I created a new outline. Half-way through draft 4 (rewritten from scratch), I feel much more in command of my story and in love with my characters. The individual scenes fit together in a way that they hadn't in previous versions, partly because some got moved in order to create better motivation and partly because I can now see better what role secondary characters play in the story over all.I would certainly recommend this book as a tool for revitalizing a manuscript that has gone stale or gotten bogged down in the middle.

I bought a copy of this book years ago, when it was a new concept and copies were only available at writer's conferences. I loved that book, re-read it regularly, loaned it to others, and nearly wore out my copy.This edition is at least three times the size, and even more overloaded with useful information for fiction writers, and some nonfiction writers. (Biographies and personal stories could benefit from the insights in this book.)This book pioneered the "hero's journey" as a plotting template, based on Joseph Campbell's study of mythology and archetypes.However, this edition of the book takes readers (and fellow writers) far beyond the hero's journey concepts. In fact, this book is tremendously useful for all fiction writers, not just those following the "hero's journey" plot structure. (In other words, it will work with the three-act model, Aristotle's incline, and so on.)For example, there's a wonderful chapter about polarity. It shows you ways to improve your characters and their conflicts. Polarity helps engage your readers, increase tension, and helps with that dreaded mid-book slump where the plot can drag.In addition, the author has drawn on all kinds of cross-cultural examples of different elements of any story, fiction and nonfiction alike. Those insights are tremendously useful.Also, this book is so well-organized and broken into headings, you can open the book to almost any page and find something useful for your story. When I read it -- even after all these years -- I discover about three "ah-HA!" ideas on every page.Though this book may be almost overwhelming for beginning writers, it's a book every writer should own. I have read several books on writing and this is one of the most significant I have found. It is a true gem if you are interested in the Mythic underpinnings of Story as well as the mythic underpinnings of your story as a writer. It is very well-written. It does not preach 'how-to,' or offer method. Instead, it delves into the heart of what 'Makes Story' for us humans by putting the work of Joseph Campbell (The Power of Myth, Hero of a Thousand Faces and more,) and Carl Jung into context for the writer. There are terrific examples of how archetypes propel a story through its arcs with emphasis on the major Jungian archetypes. It challenges you as a writer to understand how myth drives story today. Vogler provides excellent examples of mythic arc as developed screen-plays and novels. Christopher Vogler is a charming and concise writer who makes Jungian mythic theory applicable to all writers. This is not a book of exercises. It is a book to think and construct by. An absolute winner.

I had previously read the Second Edition of Mr. Vogler's excellent book, and this edition offers MUCH more. This is by far the best book for aspiring novelists and screenwriters. It is well-written, east-to-follow, and brilliant in every way. But if you're like I am, you will be underlining and highlighting until you run out of in.

Seriously? I have a major in creative writing and have written two novels and published one so far. I would have to say that if there is only one book that you should read in order to write fiction, this is it. No question about it. No other book I've read in the last forty years (and I have quite a library of writer's manuals) even comes close. If you want to be a writer, this and the Chicago manual of style are all you need. If you have a degree in English, you don't need the manual of style. Just get it.

outstanding study of an amazing story. Extraordinary research, very thoughtful, careful, reflective. Amazing story.

I was curious about this memoir as its author is the man whom Primo Levi depicts in his own writing about the concentration camp where they were fellow inmates, as the lowest of the low. Concentration camps were where people were pared down to the few basic shreds of their character, ,According to the revered Primo Levi, every shred of Steinberg proved contemptible. Steinberg makes a slightly better case for himself. One should read both accounts.

I just finished reading this great first-hand account of living through the Holocaust in Nazi death camps, by Paul Steinberg. What separates this text is that it seems less caught up with providing the reader with every single detail of daily life and more focused with the author's personal struggle, the friendships gained and forgotten, the death camp's social hieracrchies, and of course, his incredible task of survival. Paul Steinberg admits that he was an atypical Jew, uninvolved with Jewish ways and traditions, and he wonders why he survived and others perished; Jews that were more religious, possessed more wisdom, strength, etc. Truly, Steinberg's ordeal is almost unbelievable. He was able to do what he had to in order to survive. This book is great if you want to gain a good understanding of these historical events, a different time period in life, and the human struggle, all through the eyes of this remarkable man. He is honest and sincere, and holds nothing back.

I haven't heard of Paul Steinberg before I read this book. The book is a gem and recollects the life of a camp inmate trying to survive the war. Steinberg was one of those people who helpedthe inmate leadership run the killing camps. He was a chemist in one of the IB Farben complexes. His short but powerful story shows how stronger people were consumed, while a flexible youngster survived the camps by doing what he had to do to stay alive.This should be required reading for those people who deny that the Holocaust happened. It is also a reminder that the general population should always remember these events. Steinberg found this book hard to write, but it was easy to read and conveyed a powerful perspective.

Speak You Also tells an empowering story of struggle and determination without showing the slightest trace of self-pity. Steinberg's novel was so moving, because he did not feel bad for everything he endured, but instead focused on the theme of what made him survive in contrast to the concept of death. From the point of view of someone who never witnessed the Holocaust, the memoir perfectly illustrates the life lessons that have come from those who endured it. One example would be the constant question of morality, which Steinberg comments "You do good when you can and when you happen to feel like it. In all other cases, you do evil, if you have even the slightest scrap of power". The author captures the emotions of himself and those around him. He is able to bring back all these horrifying memories to share with the reader so his story is never forgotten. This novel is by far a must read for people of all ages and backgrounds. Speak You Also is Steinberg's time to speak out about the horrors he witnessed during his days in Auschwitz as well as to reflect back on many unanswered questions in this extremely heart-filled and brutally honest account of the Holocaust.
